Baffles are flat or slightly contoured components that seal the top of the blank mould during the forming process. After the glass gob is loaded into the blank mould, the baffle closes over the top to contain the glass during initial forming (settle blow or counter blow). Baffles must provide a reliable seal while withstanding the thermal shock of contact with molten glass and the mechanical forces of repeated opening and closing cycles.
Frequent external compressive force causes wear and collapse at the baffle lock‑ring position. This eventually results in poor fitting between the baffle and the glass blank mold, leading to air leakage. Consequently, parisons suffer from baffle‑line defects and uneven wall thickness. The laser cladding process with cobalt‑based alloy powder can effectively restore lock‑ring dimensions and extend the service life of the baffle.
