Glass molds are core components for forming glass bottles and glassware. They are continuously exposed to scouring by molten glass at temperatures above 1100°C with alternating hot and cold cycles. Problems such as wear on parting surfaces, oxidation and peeling of mold cavities, thermal fatigue cracks, blackening due to glass adhesion, and chipping of edges occur frequently. Many used molds lose precision and restrict production capacity. They have to be scrapped and replaced frequently, which becomes a major pain point for numerous glass manufacturers, featuring high costs, frequent downtime and heavy losses.

Laser cladding remanufacturing technology is tailor-made for precision repair and strengthening of used glass molds. It enables low-cost, high-performance restoration of old molds, allowing scrapped molds to be reused for 24-hour non-stop mass production.

Supported by a high-precision automatic cladding system combined with five-axis linked precision motion technology, it can selectively repair wear, cracks and defects on various parts including mold cavities, parting surfaces, punches, cores, mouth molds and plungers. After repair and strengthening by laser cladding, used molds achieve great improvements in high-temperature resistance, thermal fatigue resistance and scouring resistance. Their service life can reach 2 to 3 times that of new molds, greatly cutting enterprises’ mold procurement and operating costs. The equipment supports stable 24-hour continuous operation. Before laser cladding we need to : Remove oil contamination, carbon deposits, residual glass and oxide scale by grinding or laser cleaning. The surface must be thoroughly cleaned; otherwise, pores and inclusions are likely to form during cladding.

Crack treatment: If cracks are detected, grooves shall be machined for crack root removal to completely eliminate cracks and prevent their further propagation after cladding
